Looking for a gift to impress? Hand thrown pottery mugs are two-fold…they’re a great way to take in that favorite hot beverage in a style that’s unique and one of a kind, or they could be used as a handy catch-all for tools being used at the moment – and what better way to do that than with a compartment that really complements the sculpting hobby? After all, it’s made of, yep, real clay!
I used to attend the Georgia Renaissance festival (long time ago -pre-covid days) and one of the booths I visited first sold mugs just like these that I am about to show you. They were made no doubt on the classic instrument of masters – the potter’s wheel, and had earthy glaze colors like brown and green, and lastly they all had a date on them so I could remember what year I got “that” mug, as a treasured souvenir.
I don’t drink out of mine, by the way, they -yep, you guessed – hold a lot of my implements, like pencils, pens, markers, and sometimes I will park a single brush in there after I’ve used (and cleaned) it and want to put it in a handy place to dry. Anyway, I’m done dating myself there, let’s move along with my findings!
Stoneware Mugs with Designs
Let’s start with one of my favs…these beauties have replicas of a dragonfly and a sunflower on the front….I believe made by the same artist. Love the earthy color tones, I don’t know that I would drink out of these (I always have THOSE kinds of mugs that I designate as “too pretty to drink out of” …well these would be on that list! They each hold 16 oz which is pretty generous as most “standard” mug sizes is usually about 11 oz.
Large Pottery Mug with Flowers
Looking fro a true statement piece? Here you go – I’ve never seen anything like this one – look closely, the flowers and scrolls on the front kind of protrude slightly so it has an extra bit of dimension and depth to it. Perfect to use to hold your tools or just use it as a decor piece in your studio, your call!
Two-Toned Color Stoneware Mugs
The ombre look never goes out of style; neither does the two-toned look. We think you’ll agree with these earthy looking cups I found here – they feature a base coat underglaze with a contrasting color near the top that really sets it off.
Large Handmade Mug Set – Thank You Gift
Have a housewarming, wedding, or going away party coming up? This set of 2 cups makes a thoughtful gift indeed – they are emblazoned with the words thankful and blessed….and have a beautiful ombre blue color – they’re generously sized too, in 18 oz, and would be perfect for serving soup in as well as hot beverages. A gift they will treasure for sure!
Tall Color Spiral Design Mug
I’ve saved the best for last…what do you think about these color gradations, lush purple adn red undertones…you could almost use this as a vase if you wanted?
And now….care to see the stoneware mug I got from the Ren-Fest? This one is from 2007…
