I am always on the lookout for the most unique handmade recycled Christmas ornaments and this year did not disappoint at all! Many ordinary things can be made into tree ornaments, whether wire, beads, even actual Christmas cards. Browsing through them really took me back to my elementary school days when we got to make tree ornaments as a fun art project.
One in particular I had fun with was these cute little empty matchboxes, we had little gray pompoms and wiggly eyes with which we made a cute little mouse and his head and ears would be sticking up like he was sleeping inside the matchbox “bed”. So cute! (See bottom of post) There were others – and best of all I got to upcycle all kinds of items like popsicle sticks, little Styrofoam balls, and too many more to name here.
Pin Me, Friend! 🎄
These ornaments I found include great up-cycled materials, and also reflect current craft trends too so whether you get one or a dozen you will no doubt have an awesome looking tree as a result! Without further ado I’ll walk you through my favs! THIS is how we earth conscious like to deck the halls!
Are you familiar with the craft of making paper beads? This cute heart ornament is made from exactly that – in all different colors. Paper beads are a unique craft that keeps magazines out of the trash AND made into a wonderful treasure such as this!
I totally love the concept behind these classic round glass ball ornaments like this one above – the round balls are filled with individual scriptures cut out from Bible pages – what a great way to celebrate the true meaning of Christmas, in such a reverent and classy way! Taking pages from old books and using them as a backdrop for printing is really hot right now and so they are high on the list for items to recycle and upcycle.
I was totally awestruck when I saw this bell shaped ornament above and later on found out it was made from an actual computer circuit board! That’s amazing – In addition to making something from three and a half floppy diskettes I have a few of these actual boards lying around (they belonged to my husband who was a class-A computer geek)
Now me, I cant imagine making anything out of them, so I highly respect the talent and effort that making ornaments like this one above must have took. This is the perfect gift idea for the lover of all things geeky – I’ll bet they’ve never seen anything like THIS before!
Well as long as I’m on the subject of my husband another passion of his was collecting graphic novels/comic books, so naturally I stopped over this really cool ornament I found above that was handmade from comics! I have a whole passel of these books that I was attempting to sell on eBay and that’s a challenge since I am not super , uh, literate in the graphic novel appraisal niche.
But this ornament gave me an idea! If it turns out I can’t sell all of hub’s comic books, maybe I could turn some of them into ornaments like this?? Hey these things are worth something and they’re way too special to just end up collecting dust somewhere….So if you or someone you know if is a huge fan of superheros and comics, this would be perfect!
Last but not least. This sand dollar glass ornament is made from the bottom of a real coke bottle – I love this; it looks really classy – and it would also look really good in your window too, regardless of what time of year. The craftsmanship is unique and one of a kind.
Now…These Gift Ornaments Made From Jewelry Boxes
I really wanted to share some pictures of ornaments I had made; I’ve been digging through boxes hoping to come across some of them since it is that time of year and I’m going through them anyway, lol. Although I didn’t find the same ones I mentioned earlier , I did come across these…These are tree ornaments I made out of little bitty jewelry boxes (the kind used for presentation)
The one thing that is missing, is the gold wire loops I attached by removing the lids and taping the wire to the underside of the lids…I use these as part of a prop for a mini tabletop tree I set out every Christmas, you know one of those kinds of little tree displays you might see on a banquet table or something….they’re like, 14″ tall and look really cute.
Hope you enjoyed these amazing and unique ornaments I found? 🎄 No matter what time of year there is always something special you can add to your collection to have when the time comes. Happy ornament-ing!
